A Latam Airlines Boeing 787 dropped midair Monday, injuring at least 50 people. If true, that would be reminiscent of when a military Airbus A330 suddenly nose-dived in 2014. A pilot-seat mishap sent a military Airbus A330 plummetingTen years ago, on February 9, 2014, a Royal Air Force Airbus A330 plummeted 4,400 feet in about 30 seconds. The Boeing 787 system involved has a fly-by-wire system, but instead of a side-stick, the planemaker has installed the traditional yoke. A Singapore Airlines Boeing 787 flight simulator shows the fly-by-wire system uses a yoke instead of the Airbus' side-stick.

In 1958, when Mary Pat Laffey Inman became a stewardess — as they were then called — for Northwest Airlines, she was 20 years old and the clock was already ticking. That is, if she didn’t marry, get pregnant or even gain too much weight before that: All were grounds for termination. Six years later, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act, outlawing discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin, and female flight attendants began to join forces against sexism. It also set the precedent for nondiscriminatory hiring of flight attendants across the industry. But even then, not everything changed: Flight attendants on some airlines were still subjected to “weigh-ins” into the 1990s.

A Bonus QuestionFor 40 years I’ve worked as a purser for one of the world’s largest airlines. Nothing in my career has troubled me as much as the recent requirement to push the company credit card on passengers. I feel that Americans are already up to their eyeballs in debt and pushing more debt onto them is usurious and unethical. Credit cards can indeed be very costly for borrowers — and, in turn, very profitable for lenders. The real reason major airlines are pushing credit cards, after all, is that payments from the banks with which they partner have become among their biggest sources of revenue.

Kimberly Burckhalter joined United Airlines as a flight attendant in New York City in 1993, nearly 30 years ago. She is now based in Los Angeles and serves as an international purser on flights between Los Angeles and London, Sydney and the Hawaiian Islands. Ms. Burckhalter’s love for flying comes largely from her grandfather, a longtime TWA employee who started off as a luggage handler and retired as a sales manager.
